What is a Mystery Picnic?
A Mystery Picnic is an experience that allows you to take in the sights, flavors, and culture of a neighborhood in a unique way. A few days before your booking, you’ll be given information such as where to park, and a clue that tells you where to pick up the first item for your picnic. (We’ll talk more about this later). After picking up the first item, you’ll be given the next clue.
Clues are delivered to your phone in the form of riddles and puzzles. These aren’t terribly difficult, so don’t worry about being getting stranded in the middle of your adventure if you get all puzzled out. If we made it all the way through, so can you! 🙂
Don’t worry about running out of conversation as you stroll from place to place.! There are also little games to play and conversation starters interwoven into the app. You don’t have to use them, but they’re there if you’d like to try them out!
Where Do You Go?
That depends on the location you choose.
Each location’s mystery picnic is different because they are curated to highlight restaurants and attractions specific to your area. My experience in Chicago will be very different from an experience in Los Angeles. And even within the same city, there may be changes to the itinerary over time.
There are currently options for Mystery Picnics in 30 cities across the United States, plus even more cities in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and United Kingdom. If you’re wondering if there’s a Mystery Picnic close to you, check out the full list of locations on their website.
But no matter where you are in the world. the general plan for the picnics is the same. You’ll go on a walk in the city or area you specified, and you’ll pick up different courses for your picnic from local businesses along the way.
But Wait…There’s More!
You’ll also be given some optional activities near each pick-up location. These can be a lot of fun, especially if you’re looking for an excuse to linger with your date. 😉
The type of activity depends upon what is available in your area. They can be free or cost a little money (please note that any cost associated with these options is not included in your picnic price). If you have time, you can choose to take part immediately, or you can jot down the location and plan to visit another day…perhaps for a second date!
I don’t want to spoil any part of the mystery, but I’ll share that on our Lincoln Park Mystery Picnic in Chicago, some of the optional activities included an art museum, street art, pubs, and parks. We did some on our date and saved some for later. Having recommendations of more things to do was so nice!
What Kind of Food Do You Get?
Again, the exact menu depends upon your location and the restaurants you’ll be visiting.
Think picnic food. You’ll receive a main dish, side dishes, drinks, and a dessert. Your foods won’t need heating before serving. Instead, they’ll either need to be kept cool or at room temperature.
We’ll talk more about what you’ll need to bring with you later, but I do want to mention it is a good idea to have a cooler or insulated bag and some ice packs to keep the cold items cold, especially if it’s a hot day.
What About Food Allergies and Special Diets?
Yes, they can make accommodations for dietary needs!
If you’d like a vegan, vegetarian, or gluten-free experience, you’ll be able to specify this at the time of your online booking.
If you have other food allergies or dietary needs, you can speak to a concierge to determine if your needs can be accommodated. The Amazing Co may need time to contact their partner businesses to ensure that your request can be met.
Should I Bring Anything?
Yes!
While your Mystery Picnic is prepaid and planned out for you, there are some items that can make your experience more enjoyable.
- Your fully-charged phone and portable charger so you can be sure to receive your clues.
- A cooler or insulated bag to hold your chilled items. You’ll be doing a lot of walking, so make sure that it’s something you can easily carry.
- Ice packs to tuck inside your cooler to keep items cool.
- Water to drink along the way. You’ll receive drinks for your picnic, but it’s important to stay hydrated on your adventure.
- A picnic blanket so you’ll be comfortable when it’s picnic time.
- Disposable plates, cutlery, cups, and napkins as they may not be provided for you.
- A small trash bag to make cleaning up easy.
