Guinness beer has the perfect, full-bodied taste to make up the base of this smooth drink accented with hints of blackberry. What Is the Black Magic Cocktail?

The Black Magic Cocktail is a beer cocktail. Beer cocktails consist of beer mixed with other ingredients to produce a well-rounded drink. In this case, Guinness is the beer that makes up the base of the cocktail.

Guinness is heavy and bitter, with a touch of sweet that is reminiscent of dark chocolate. The blackberries and grenadine help to bring that sweetness out in this cocktail, and those flavors are smoothed over with bourbon.

All together, these ingredients come together to create a smooth cocktail that is best sipped over the course of an afternoon.

This cocktail is an excellent before dinner drink.

What Inspired this Drink?

When a collaboration of cocktails surfaced on Instagram, I was excited to join in. The catch–the drinks had to be dark as midnight. I had no idea what to make.

I decided to try this spooky cocktail designed by Lucy Parissi from the blog Super Golden Bakes. I loved the combination of beer and liquor, along with the eerie black and green garnish. I tweaked the amounts of each ingredient a bit, tasted it, and knew it was a keeper!

What Can I Substitute for Guinness?

For the best cocktail, I do recommend using Guinness for its unique flavor. But if you aren’t able to get any, the best substitute is would be an equal amount of stout beer. A porter will also work, but it is a much milder taste than stout so it will affect the overall flavor of the cocktail.

What Can I Substitute for Grenadine?

You can use simple syrup as a substitute for the sweetness of grenadine, but you’ll lose that light, fruity essence. To get it back, you can use a tablespoon of simple syrup with a teaspoon of pomegranate juice. This will also mimic the color of grenadine.

Another substitution for grenadine is cocktail cherry juice. It’s sweet, fruity, and colored like grenadine. If you enjoy making cocktails with a cherry flavor, you’ll be able to use this mixer for a myriad of other drinks, too.
