What Are Pumpkin Spice Pancakes?

Pancakes are an American and Canadian breakfast favorite, notably served with butter and maple syrup for a filling and sweet start to the mornings. They are made from simple ingredients, such as flour, eggs, salt, and milk. Some pancake recipes include sugar, vanilla, or other ingredients.

Pumpkin spice pancakes are a seasonal variety of these very basic breakfast pancakes. Vanilla extract is replaced with pumpkin pie extract, a portion of milk is replaced with pumpkin puree, and pumpkin pie seasoning adds the pumpkin spice that so many people love in the fall.

It's easy to make these pumpkin pancakes from scratch.

Can I Use Fresh Pumpkin?

Yes. In fact, fresh pumpkin is preferable, but it must be blended into pumpkin puree for these pancakes. If you haven’t done this before, find out how to make your own pumpkin puree in this article. It’s easy to make and gives any pumpkin recipe a fresh taste.

If you are using canned pumpkin puree, it is important to use canned pumpkin, not canned pumpkin pie filling. Canned pumpkin is unseasoned, and since we are using extract and a seasoning blend, we want to start with a blank flavor canvas.

Where Can I Get Pumpkin Pie Spice?

In the autumn, pumpkin pie spice can be found in practically any supermarket near other spices and seasonings. But over time I’ve discovered that not all spices are created equally. As with meats and wine, choosing high quality spices drastically affects the quality of the finished product, even if it’s just pancakes.

I have been gradually transitioning my spice cabinet to The Spice House spices. I have found that they have a greater depth of flavor than other brands. Their Pumpkin Spice Seasoning Blend is a mixture of cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, and cloves. Not only do I use it in my pancakes and pumpkin pies, but I like to sprinkle it on my morning coffee and French toast for a little hint of autumnal flavor.
