The WORST Thing About Being a Food Blogger

There are so many things that I love about my job as a food blogger. The laptop lifestyle of a flexibile schedule and being able to work from anywhere is the best. And I’ve always liked writing, so being able to express my thoughts through the written word is perfect for me.

And then there’s the glorious food. I spend my days surrounded by it, whether I’m tinkering with recipes, photographing plated dishes, or sampling a restaurant’s finest offerings. Sharing stories through food is why I got into this profession, and the best way to do that is to taste, taste, and taste again.

But all that tasting doesn’t exactly bode well for a certain middle-aged someone who spends a great deal of time standing or sitting in one place. There definitely is something behind the old expression “too much of a good thing.”

Ironically, the best and worst thing about being a food blogger is getting to eat all kinds of delicious foods. It's fun and delicious...but oh, my thighs!

My Problem with “Doing Keto”

Last year I educated myself about several eating plans to help with weight loss and decided that a keto lifestyle was the best fit for me. I have a sensitivity to gluten which seems to be getting worse as time goes on, so it made sense to reduce those products in my diet as much as possible. I planned to try keto for 3 months to see what happened and go from there.

Flash forward six months from that decision point and I had lost almost 25 pounds on keto. A little of the weight came back, which I had expected. But when the holidays rolled around and I somehow decided that Christmas cookies and hot cocoa made a fantastic daily breakfast, my jeans were getting tight. I thought about doing keto again, but just thinking of it made me exhausted. Want to know why?

  • Keto isn’t intuitive. There are a lot of really good foods you can eat, but if you accidentally or unknowingly eat “don’t eat” foods, your progress is stopped and you essentially go back to square one. It took a decent amount of time for me to educate myself about this type of eating style, and even then I felt like I didn’t know what I was doing for ages.
  • Keto requires planning. Gone are the days of asking the family what they want for dinner at 4pm. Your meals and snacks need to be carefully planned as there aren’t many keto-friendly shortcut foods out there.
  • Keto foods take time to be prepped and cooked. Going hand in hand with meal planning is the prep time. Since there isn’t a tremendous variety of ready-made sauces, side dishes, or premade shortcut entrees that are keto friendly, you have to make most things yourself. And that takes time–whether you prep on a daily or weekly basis.
  • Calories still count on keto. While the focus of keto is eating the right kinds of foods, your body doesn’t magically ignore the calories you’re ingesting. Sure, you might be consuming good proteins, vegetables, and fats, but if you eat too much of them, you’re not going to lose weight.

My New Hero, Personal Trainer Food

I discovered Personal Trainer Food at exactly the right time, and it’s the perfect solution to everything I struggled with when I started keto on my own.

Personal Trainer Food is a meal delivery service that provides low carb, high protein food in correct serving sizes. The food contains healthy fats and no processed sugars, starches, or fillers, and it’s all naturally low in gluten. Many items are even gluten-free.

Customers are able to choose their own foods for each meal from a menu that offers enough variety to keep you from getting tired of the same old thing every day. The food is delivered frozen in a large insulated box, so everything will stay frozen until you unbox it later that day, even if you’re gone when it arrives.

It’s nice to not have to worry about things like that. That’s what Personal Trainer Food does. They take the worry and stress out of eating for weight loss so you can focus on other things.

  • Pre-Portioned Servings: No stress about how much is too much or what to do with leftovers. You’ll begin to understand what a healthy serving looks like on your plate.
  • Convenient Individual Packaging: Take comfort in knowing that everything you eat will taste fresh and delicious. Each piece of food is flash frozen immediately after cooking, sealing in flavor.
  • Fast and Convenient: Grab the food you want out of your freezer, microwave it, and you’re done. Dinner is literally ready in less than 5 minutes.
  • Easy to Cook: Microwave heating instructions are conveniently printed on each package. There’s no instruction sheet to keep track of. Or in my case, to lose. Foods are cooked in 2 and a half minutes or less.
  • No Pots and Pans to Wash: Microwaving the food in its package means you can give your pot-scrubbing fingers a rest. All you have to do is dispose of the bag.

How It Works

Getting started with Personal Trainer Food is impressively easy.

There are a few different plans to choose from, based upon your personal preferences and weight loss goals. Some include breakfast, lunch, and dinner, others offer add-on meals or snacks. But no matter which you choose, you can select your own foods. More on that in a minute.

Once your foods are chosen you can pick when you want your food to be delivered. I wanted to begin using mine right after a trip, so I planned for the food to arrive before we left. It came right on schedule! I was impressed by the thick insulation inside the box. It was cold outside when my order came, but after seeing the packing materials, I am confident that my food would remain frozen even in the heat.

I had cleared a shelf in my freezer for my order, but my stuff-in-the-freezer method made it difficult to see my food choices each day. I recommend using either containers or Ziploc gallon-sized bags to organize food by day or by type. You’d avoid the frozen food avalanche that I encountered that way, too.

About a week and a half after my 2 week supply of food arrived, I received a notification to order the next two weeks of food. I was able to access my account on the website to adjust my order, increasing the number of items that I loved, or switching out the ones I wasn’t so keen on. If I didn’t have time to log in, it was no problem. They would simply send the same foods I had previously chosen.

And that’s it! See what I mean? This company is all about setting worries free!

The FOOD!

So let’s talk about the food choices that are available. First off, it’s important to note that your food choices are dictated by the plan you choose. For instance, if you choose the Rev! Rapid Weight Loss program, some of your food choices might look different than mine in the Core Weight Loss program. Some programs offer breakfast, lunch and dinner, some only two meals. Most allow some add-ons, such as breakfasts (if they’re not provided) and snacks.

I chose to do the Core program for 14 days, and I added on breakfasts to the lunch/dinner plan. Breakfast foods mostly consist of an egg entree and a breakfast meat. Lunches and dinners each consist of an entree and a vegetable. There are a variety of snacks to add on, such as cheese sticks, nuts, beef sticks, and bars. I almost feel like I’m getting more variety in my diet with Personal Trainer Foods than I do with my meal rotations!

I have been very happy with almost all the food choices I’ve enjoyed so far, but the dish that has surprised me the most is the omelet offered for breakfast. Have you been to the complimentary breakfast offered by many hotel chains? They often serve a small omelet that has been previously made, frozen, then heated and put on the buffet. I’ve eaten those because…free breakfast, but they’re more sustenance than deliciousness.

That ain’t a Personal Trainer Food omelet!

I’ve tried several flavors of omelets on this plan so far, and they’ve all been satisfying and delicious. While they’re definitely not freshly cooked, restaurant-style omelets, they do contain a decent amount of filling and have a good flavor. Their texture is closer to a fresh-cooked omelet than I had expected for a frozen egg, and I found myself looking forward to them every morning.

I’ll go into more detail about my favorite foods in a future post, but the one thing that you’ll get no matter what you order is ease, convenience, and the proper nutrition to lose weight quickly on a low carb eating plan. I’m truly loving it!

Does It Really Work?

So does it work?

We’ll see!

I recorded my starting weight and my measurements, and now I’m following the guidelines that Personal Trainer Food provides to see how much weight I lose in a 2 week period. I’m only eating Personal Trainer Food or their recommended items if I need a snack. I’m doing 20 minutes of brisk activity each day (they recommend walking but it is too cold and snowy here for that). And I’m drinking plenty of water.

For the next 2 weeks I’ll be posting pictures of my Personal Trainer Food meals on my social media accounts. Be sure to check out my Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter accounts to get a glimpse at my super easy Personal Trainer Food meals!

  1. Sounds interesting and good for me at the same time!

  2. Looks great! Not all meal prep companies are so easy to prep and use!

  3. This service looks so helpful and convenient and takes the guess work out of what to cook. That’s the worst part for me is figuring out what to cook. It’s so much easier for me to do meal plans.

  4. This does seem like it would take the hassle out of keto.

    • It really does. While I don’t advocate remaining uneducated about what we’re putting into our bodies, I know that learning the ins and outs of low-carb eating is tedious and takes a while to get used to. I love how this plan makes it easy to eat the right foods without being afraid of messing up.

  5. Mom of 2, Master of None

I did keto too, for a little while, to manage my gestational diabetes. I was glad that it helped me lose a bit of weight in my 3rd trimester! But yeah, breastfeeding put it all right back on. So hard to maintain.

  6. Yes, Keto requires a lot of effort & planning. Eliminating the sugar is worth it. The food looks delicious.

  7. If I were trying to lose weight this looks like something I would try. Not that it is a Keto thing, just that it looks good and affordable.

Nicely written and put together, plus your pictures SELL that’s for sure! 😍 Thank you for sharing this delivery to maybe try.

  8. This looks like a great plan. I agree that some plans a lot more work than they are worth. The key is to find something that fits into your lifestyle.

  9. I don’t love cooking so I love how easy this looks. I find sometimes (because I don’t love cooking), I just snack all day and don’t have true meals. T

  10. The food looks yum! Is the program affordable? Would you recommend of a family?

    • I can’t get over how delicious the food is, to be honest. The plan that I was on incorporated breakfast, lunch, and dinner and worked out to about $15/day, or $5/meal. I’m not sure how that compares to other meal delivery services. I don’t think this would be right for a family since it is for weight loss, but if a couple wanted to lose weight together this would be a wonderful program!

  11. I haven’t tried a keto plan before, but I’ve heard great things about it. I have tried meal deliveries before, but you still have to prep them. I love that this one, you don’t have to prep! So easy!

  12. Looks great. Will have to try. Always looking for new recipes

  13. Sounds like a great program. I do agree that keto is to involved for me.
This sounds yummy. I may give it a try

  14. Yummm! Can’t wait to see your results!
