What Is Fizzy Blackberry Gin Lemonade?

My fizzy gin lemonade is a cocktail I created after sampling Bluecoat gin. It inspired me to create my own version of hard lemonade, and I’m a sucker for a good fruity lemonade, be it strawberry, blueberry, raspberry, or in this case, blackberry.

I wanted a cocktail that would be refreshing and not overpowering. My initial attempt was much too strong, so I added a healthy portion of lemon lime soda. Not only did it add more lemony flavor, but it also gave me the perfect summery spritzer-type cocktail that I was looking for.

A mocktail version can be created by simply leaving out the gin. My guests loved the mocktail version as much as the cocktail, so don’t be afraid to give it a go!

This light, refreshing adult beverage is perfect for celebrating the 4th of July.

Does the Brand of Gin Matter?

Yes!

I crafted this cocktail recipe specifically around the flavors of Bluecoat Gin, so using a different brand will give you a different taste. This may not be true of all spirits, but it is definitely true in this case.

Why?

Bluecoat Gin is crafted in America, using 100% certified organic botanicals. While the gin does contain juniper berries, as it should, the pine-y, woodsy notes are toned down to allow the fragrant, citrussy side of the gin to flourish. The citrus bouquet that greeted me when I opened the bottle inspired me to create this cocktail, which is a play upon the classic American summertime lemonade.

I never enjoyed gin until I tried Bluecoat, and let me tell you I am never buying another brand. It isn’t available in stores in my area so I have to have it shipped, but it is totally worth it. You can click here to see if Bluecoat is available near you.

Bluecoat Gin gives this refreshing cocktail a citrussy base.

Can I Make This Without a Cocktail Shaker?

Yes!

The purpose of shaking the cocktail is not only to mix it thoroughly, but to cool it without heavily diluting the spirits. For this reason, I recommend using a jar with a screw lid or a storage bowl with a tightly sealed lid to do the shaking. You can strain the mixture using a wire kitchen strainer.

Even when I use a cocktail shaker, I almost always use a wire kitchen strainer to strain the mixture. It tends to filter out pulp and seeds better than the strainer on typical cocktail shakers.
