There’s nothing like frozen goodies on a hot day, and this freezer pie is no exception. Chocolate pudding and Cool Whip come together in frozen form in a tasty graham cracker crust. Marshmallows, chocolate chips, and pecans cleverly dot this dessert for all the fun and flavor of rocky road ice cream in an elegant pie. Making it the day before frees up your time on the day of your gathering, allowing you to indulge with your guests instead of toiling in the kitchen!

What is Frozen Pudding Pie?
This refreshing frozen pie is a super easy recipe made with instant chocolate pudding, Cool Whip, and a few add-ins. The resulting dessert tastes just like rocky road ice cream. While it isn’t technically an ice cream pie, it certainly seems like one!
I came across this recipe a few years ago in a summer issue of Taste of Home magazine. I tested it out that year for our 4th of July celebration and everyone loved it. (You can find that original recipe on the Taste of Home website.)
I’m featuring this recipe on the blog for a special reason. This summer, I joined the Cozy Mystery Cooking Club, a book club especially for foodie bookworms.
The inaugural book was A Deadly Inside Scoop by Abby Collette. Since the book was centered around the main character’s ice cream shop, we were asked to share a dish inspired by the book. My contribution was this delicious pie!
If you love to read mystery stories as mush as you love to cook, consider joining the Cozy Mystery Cooking Club! You can read more about it on the wonderfully informative blogs by my friends Sarah and Linda at That Lemonade Life and Sip and Sanity, respectively.
Can I Make Substitutions?
The sky’s the limit when it comes to substitutions. Need inspiration? Just think of your favorite ice cream flavors!
Or, check out these flavor combinations that I’ve been meaning to try.
- Pistachio – Use pistachio pudding and chopped pistachio nuts in a graham cracker crust
- Moose Tracks – Use vanilla pudding, chopped peanut butter cups and semi sweet chocolate chips in a chocolate crust
- Chocolate Peanut Butter – Use chocolate pudding and chopped peanut butter cups in a chocolate crust
- Strawberry Cheesecake – Use cheesecake pudding, graham cracker pieces and sliced strawberries in a graham cracker crust
- Cookies and Cream – Use cookies and cream pudding and chopped Oreos in a chocolate crust
How Long Will This Pie Stay Fresh?
Pudding freezes well and takes on an ice cream-like consistency when frozen. That’s what I loved about pudding pops in the 1980s, when pudding everything was at the height of popularity!
But since other ingredients, such as Cool Whip and add-ins, are combined with the pudding, your frozen pudding pie will only stay fresh and safe for about a month in the freezer.
Be sure to keep your frozen pie in an airtight container or Ziploc freezer bag to protect it. But if your family is anything like mine, you won’t have any leftover pie at all!
Directions
- Beat the half and half with pudding mix for one to two minutes, or until it thickens.
- Mix in thawed Cool Whip.
- Stir in chocolate chips, mini marshmallows, and chopped pecans.
- Pour into graham cracker crust.
- Garnish by pressing additional chocolate chips, mini marshmallows, and pecan pieces into the finished pie.
- Freeze until firm, at least six hours. Allow pie to rest at room temperature for about ten minutes before serving.
Drizzle slices with chocolate syrup, if desired.
