What Are Leftover Candy Cookies?
Leftover candy cookies transform bits of Halloween candy into delicious cookies that you won’t be able to stop eating! A basic vanilla cookie batter is enhanced with candy pieces, that can give you a new creation every time. The blending of candy and cookie makes this the perfect snack for a sweet tooth!
The history of mixing candies into cookie batter goes back to 1938 with the birth of the chocolate chip cookie. Ruth Wakefield, manager of the Tollhouse Restaurant in Whitman, Massachusetts, added pieces of chocolate into her cookie batter. Some versions of this story avow that the act was done to create chocolate cookies, while others maintain that she fully intended to create chocolate chunk cookies. Whatever her intention was, the final product became one of the most beloved cookies in the United States.
Do You Have Any Tips or Tricks?
One of the secrets to amazing cookies is ensuring that the dough is well-mixed, but not overmixed. My Kitchen Aid stand mixer is my very best friend and cookie co-chef. It combines stiff dough a lot more easily than I do and it never gets a tired arm. I love when people compliment my cookies and cakes, but honestly, they should be complimenting my appliance!
Another secret is in selecting the candy. Caramel or nougat pieces will melt, so Caramello and Three Musketeers bars don’t work out so well in this recipe. Solid chocolate and peanut butter candies are substantial enough to hold up in the cookies while still melting a bit, giving your cookies a delicious zing of flavor.
What Candies Should I Use?
You can change the taste of these cookies by changing the candies you choose to use. Sometimes I try to use all of one candy bar, but this time I mixed them up. I used Snickers, peanut butter cups, Reese’s Pieces, M&Ms, and Kit Kats. They disappeared before the day was over!
Here are some great candy combinations.
- Peanut Butter Cups, Reese’s Pieces, and M&Ms
- Take 5 and Snickers
- Almond Joy and Hershey’s Special Dark
- Kit Kat and 100 Grand
No matter what candies you use, your Monster Mash Candy Cookies will be the after-Halloween hit of the neighborhood!
